Udupi Sri Krishna Temple
About the Temple
The Sri Krishna Math stands on Car Street in the centre of Udupi and is linked to the 13th-century philosopher Madhvacharya. Eight Madhva Maths take turns to run its worship, handing over every two years in the Paryaya ceremony. Devotees view the Krishna image through a latticed window rather than from inside the sanctum, and men remove their shirts before the inner temple.
Why visit
- See the shrine at the heart of the Madhva tradition and the Paryaya rotation among the eight Maths.
- View Krishna through the window linked by legend to the poet-saint Kanakadasa.

Karnataka Tourism gives one long day, but rituals pause the queue at intervals. The Math's own website lists darshan from 05:00 to 13:00 and 15:30 to 21:00, with the Maha Pooja from 10:30 to 11:30, so plan around an afternoon break. Timings can change during the Paryaya handover in January of even years and on festival days. Confirm at the Math office.
Before You Go
- Time to allow
1 hour to 2 hours inside the temple. This is a planning allowance, not a queue time; festival days take longer.
- Dress
From 19 January 2026 men are reported to remove their shirts before the inner temple at all hours, not only at the morning Maha Pooja. Jeans, T-shirts, sleeveless tops and short outfits are refused for everyone. Men wear a dhoti or trousers; women wear a sari or salwar suit.
