Gokarna Mahabaleshwar Temple
About the Temple
The Mahabaleshwar temple in Gokarna enshrines the Atmalinga, which devotees regard as Shiva's own soul set in stone. Legend says Ganesha set it down here to stop Ravana carrying it to Lanka, so pilgrims customarily visit the Maha Ganapati temple next door first. The granite temple stands at the end of Car Street in a small coastal town also known for its beaches.
Why visit
- Seek darshan of the Atmalinga, which devotees may touch in the sanctum.
- Follow the old pilgrim order of Kotiteertha, Maha Ganapati and then Mahabaleshwara.
