Highlights
- Four-armed Rama
The image of Rama holds a conch, a discus, a bow and a garland, a form that resembles Vishnu with four arms.
- Theevra river and Meenoottu
The temple sits on the Theevra river, also called Purayar, which gives the place its name. Devotees feed the fish in the river as an offering.
- Vedi offering linked to Hanuman
The Vedi offering recalls Hanuman's arrival after the search for Sita, and Hanuman is also worshipped here.
- Hereditary custodians
Three Namboodiri families once owned the temple. Management passed to the Cochin Devaswom Board, but these families still take part in rituals and festivals.
