Airavatesvara Temple
About the Temple
Airavatesvara at Darasuram rewards a slow look at stone carving. Built under Rajaraja II in the twelfth century, this Shiva temple has a front hall shaped like a chariot and small sculpted scenes along its walls. Together with the Thanjavur and Gangaikonda Cholapuram temples it forms UNESCO's Great Living Chola Temples, and it is still a place of worship as well as a protected monument.
Why visit
- See the chariot-shaped hall and finely carved pillars of a UNESCO Great Living Chola Temple.
- Compare Rajaraja II’s ornate temple with the earlier Chola monuments at Thanjavur and Gangaikonda Cholapuram.
