Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple
About the Temple
Rajendra Chola I built this Shiva temple at his new capital after his northern campaigns. Its curving tower and carved figures offer a different expression of Chola architecture from the Big Temple at Thanjavur. Now part of the UNESCO Great Living Chola Temples, it remains a place of worship and a substantial heritage stop from Kumbakonam.
Why visit
- Explore Rajendra Chola I’s temple and the surviving traces of his imperial capital.

Highlights
- Curved vimana
The main tower rises about 55 m. Its outline curves gently inward toward the top, unlike the straight lines of the Thanjavur tower.
- Great lingam
Shiva is worshipped as a lingam about 13 ft tall, and the temple stands on a raised base.
- Lion well
A lion well, added in the 19th century, stands in the courtyard. Tradition says Rajendra I had Ganges water poured into the temple's original well.
- Navagraha stone and Nandi
A single stone carved with the nine planetary deities sits in the complex, and a large seated Nandi faces the sanctum from the courtyard.
