About the Temple
The Sharadamba temple is the heart of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham, the monastic seat that tradition traces to Adi Shankaracharya, on the bank of the Tunga river. Beside it stands the stone Vidyashankara temple, completed in 1338, with twelve pillars marked with the signs of the zodiac. Families come to pray to the goddess of learning, and many bring young children to begin their education here.

Highlights
- Vidyashankara temple
A stone temple to Shiva completed in 1338, combining Hoysala and Vijayanagara styles. Its hall has twelve pillars marked with the signs of the zodiac.
- The zodiac pillars and the sun
Karnataka Tourism says sunlight falls on each pillar in its solar month. A 2011 study in the Journal of Astronomical History and Heritage found that this match would only hold for a far earlier epoch, so treat it as a belief.
- Aksharabhyasa
Families bring children of about two and a half to five years for Aksharabhyasa, the start of learning, at the Sharada temple. It is held 08:00 to 13:00 on any day without advance booking.
- The Tunga river and its fish
The main shrines stand on the north bank of the Tunga. The Peetham asks visitors not to swim, catch the fish or feed them anything inedible.
