About Great Living Chola Temples Tour

Begin at Brihadeeswarar in Thanjavur, compare the Chola temples at Darasuram and Gangaikonda Cholapuram, then add nearby Swamimalai for Murugan worship. Two or three days leave room to look carefully at the architecture and respect the rhythm of living temples.

Brihadeeswarar at Thanjavur, Airavatesvara at Darasuram and the temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram were built under Chola kings and are still places of worship. Two days leave time to look closely at the stone work; Swamimalai, one of the six Murugan abodes, is a short drive away.

Questions Visitors Ask

Can we visit all four temples in one day?

A rushed drive may be possible, but two days give useful time for architecture and worship. Use three days for slower walking or detailed study.

Is Swamimalai one of the Great Living Chola Temples?

No. The UNESCO group consists of Brihadeeswarar at Thanjavur, the temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram and Airavatesvara at Darasuram. Swamimalai is a nearby Murugan addition.

Is this circuit in historical order?

No. It begins at the anchor and groups the trip around Thanjavur and Kumbakonam. Darasuram comes before Gangaikonda Cholapuram for this itinerary, not because it was built earlier.
