Udupi Paryaya, the Krishna Temple Handover

Udupi 1–2 days

Every two years the worship and running of the Udupi Krishna temple pass from one of the eight Ashta Mutts to the next, in a ceremony called the Paryaya. Families come to Udupi for the night procession and the dawn handover, next due in January 2028.

What happens

  1. The incoming Mutt prepares for about a year with ritual starts called muhurthas, among them the Baale, Akki, Kattige and Batha muhurthas. Sode Mutt held one such programme for its 2028 Paryaya in May 2026.
  2. Celebrations run for about two weeks. In 2026 the incoming seer's ceremonial entry into Udupi was on 9 January, and the programme ran until 22 January.
  3. On Paryaya night in 2026 the seer bathed at Dandatheertha lake in Kaup at about 1:30 am. The procession left Jodukatte at about 3 am and wound through the town to Car Street, with stops at Kanakana Kindi and the nearby temples.
  4. At dawn the new seer ascends the Sarvajna Peetha inside the temple, at 5:55 am in 2026. The outgoing seer hands over the Akshaya Patra, the Sattuga and the shrine keys.
  5. That evening in 2026 a public felicitation was held at the Rajangana, followed by the Brahma Rathotsava, a chariot procession, at 7:30 pm.
