Keeping a Tirumala Vow: Tonsure, Angapradakshinam and More
Many families go to Tirumala to keep a vow made to Lord Venkateswara, such as a tonsure, angapradakshinam or thulabharam. Tonsure needs no booking, but angapradakshinam tokens and Kalyanotsavam tickets come from TTD's monthly online quota, which opens about three months ahead.
What happens
- Book what needs a ticket on TTD's official site, ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in, on the day that month's quota opens. Angapradakshinam tokens and Kalyanotsavam tickets each have their own release slot.
- For a tonsure vow, go to the main Kalyanakatta or one of the nine mini Kalyanakattas. TTD issues computer tokens, tonsures free of cost, and provides bathrooms with hot water afterwards.
- For angapradakshinam, bathe in the Swami Pushkarini and report at VQC-I, the special entrance near the ATC car parking, at 12:30 am (1 am in Peratasi month). You then roll around the main temple's Vimana pradakshinam.
- For thulabharam, you offer sugar candy, sugar, rice or jaggery equal to your weight, on the balance in front of the padikavali inside the main temple.
- Kalyanotsavam is the deity's wedding seva, which couples attend together. A devotional guide says couples report at the Supadham entrance at 10 am; confirm the time on your ticket.
