Ratha Saptami at Tirumala: The One-Day Brahmotsavam

On Ratha Saptami, the day devotees honour as Surya Jayanti, the birth of the Sun god, Malayappa Swamy rides seven vahanams round the Mada streets between dawn and night. TTD calls it the mini Brahmotsavam, and families come to see a whole festival in one day.

What happens

  1. The day starts before sunrise with the Surya Prabha Vahanam. In 2026 it ran from 5:30 to 8 am, with sunrise at 6:45 am.
  2. Then come Chinna Sesha, Garuda and Hanumantha in the late morning and early afternoon, roughly an hour each.
  3. Around 2 pm the Sudarshana Chakram is bathed in the Swami Pushkarini. Kalpavriksha, Sarvabhoopala and, from 8 to 9 pm, Chandra Prabha close the day.
