Asthi Visarjan: Where Families Immerse Ashes in South India
After a cremation, the family collects the bones and ashes and takes them to a sacred river or the sea. In the south, many families choose Agni Theertham at Rameswaram, the sea at Kanyakumari or the Kaveri.
What happens
- The bones and ashes are collected from the cremation ground, usually on the second day and before noon. Some traditions do it on the fourth day.
- They go into a pot, which the son carries to a sacred river or the sea.
- The closest relatives immerse the ashes in the water with prayers, usually led by a priest or an elder.
- Families who can travel further sometimes take the ashes to Kasi (Varanasi) instead.
