Kode Mokku, the Bull Vow at Vemulawada
In kode mokku, a devotee leads a bull (kode), the mount of Shiva, round Rajanna's temple at Vemulawada as an offering. Devotees believe their wish will be fulfilled when they offer a bull.
What happens
- Pilgrims first bathe in the Dharma Gundam tank, whose water devotees believe is holy and healing.
- The devotee then leads the bull (kode), Shiva's vahanam Nandi, in a pradakshina round the temple.
- Some families raise a bull at home to bring, while others buy one to offer. The bull is then given to the temple.
- The temple keeps donated bulls at its goshala in Thippapur. In 2024 it held about 1,200 animals, far more than the 150 or so the ritual needs, and proposed giving bulls free to farmers.
