Temples for Health and Healing in South India
Families often travel to a temple to pray for a relative who is ill, and devotees believe certain shrines are linked to healing. Prayer goes alongside medical care, so plan short, gentle days around the patient's treatment and strength.
What happens
- At Vaitheeswaran Koil, devotees take a holy dip in the Siddhamirtham tank before praying. Some dissolve jaggery in the water, a custom linked to skin ailments.
- Devotees leave silver images of the ailing body part in the hundi, and take home thiruchandu urundai, a ball of holy soil mixed with sacred ash.
- At Samayapuram, families light maavilakku, a lamp of rice flour, jaggery and ghee, and give thanks with tonsure, archana or abhishekam.
- At Gunaseelam, priests usually ask patients and their carers to stay 48 days and attend the daily prayers. A psychiatric care unit beside the temple follows the same 48 days, and chaining patients there was stopped after the 2001 Erwadi fire.
