Temple Weddings in South India: Procedure, Documents, Registration

Many South Indian families hold the wedding itself at a temple, often on a crowded muhurtham day. Each temple sets its own booking rules and documents, and the temple's certificate does not replace registering the marriage under the law.

What happens

  1. At Tirumala, book the Kalyana Vedika slot on TTD's site, entering the couple's and both parents' details and Aadhaar, with the wedding date and time. The site generates an acknowledgment receipt.
  2. Reach Tirumala at least six hours before the muhurtham and hand in the signed receipt, Aadhaar copies, age proof and an unmarried certificate from your MRO (Tahsildar) at the Kalyana Vedika office.
  3. TTD provides the priest, mangala vaidyam, turmeric, kumkum and kalyana kankanams free. The family brings the clothes and everything else the wedding needs.
  4. At Guruvayur on a busy day, wedding parties collect tokens at the southern entrance, enter by the east, and only 24 people, photographers included, may stand near each mandapam.
  5. Register the marriage separately for legal proof. At Tirumala, the Andhra Pradesh government runs a Hindu Marriage Sub-Registrar office at the Kalyana Vedika itself.

Families pick a muhurtham day, and the best-known ones fill up. On Sunday 23 August 2026, Guruvayur held 437 weddings and 180 HR&CE temples in Tamil Nadu held about 1,200.

Before you go

  • Good to knowTTD weds only Hindu couples at the Kalyana Vedika, with the bride at least 18 and the groom at least 21. It does not perform second marriages, and both parents must attend or send documents explaining why.
  • BookingBook only through TTD's site, ttdevasthanams.ap.gov.in, or the temple's own office. For Tamil Nadu temples such as Palani, an online booking route was not confirmed; book in person at the temple office and ask for its document list.
  • Good to knowAfter a Kalyana Vedika wedding, TTD gives six people, the couple and both parents, free special entry darshan through the ATC queue, plus laddus.
  • Good to knowIn Tamil Nadu's HR&CE temples, no fee is charged for the wedding if either partner is differently abled, and the temple gives new clothes and 4 grams of gold for the thali.
