The 22 Theertham Bath at Rameswaram
Pilgrims bathe in the sea at Agni Theertham and then in the 22 wells inside Ramanathaswamy Temple before darshan. Devotees believe the bath washes away sins and counts as penance.
What happens
- Pilgrims first bathe in the sea at Agni Theertham, on the shore opposite the temple, then go inside.
- They then bathe at the 22 wells along the temple corridors. Tradition says each well stands for an arrow from Rama's quiver.
- Tamil Wikipedia lists the wells from Mahalakshmi theertham to Kodi theertham, the 22nd.
- How water is drawn and poured at each well is not confirmed here; ask temple staff on arrival.
- After the bath, pilgrims change and go for darshan. The temple's history calls bathing in the 22 wells a lifelong duty that purifies body and mind.
