Vishu Kani Darshan at Guruvayur, 15 April 2027
On Vishu, the Malayalam new year, families want the kani to be the first sight of the year. At Guruvayur they queue before dawn to see it arranged before Guruvayurappan.
What happens
- After 2 am the chief priest opens the sanctum doors and offers the kani. It is set on the right side of the sanctum before the deity.
- The kani holds paddy, cucumber, golden kanikkonna flowers, jackfruit, mango, a mirror, sacred texts, a washed mundu, gold ornaments and currency notes. Devotees see it from the Namaskara Mandapam as they enter.
- In 2025 the kani darshan ran from 2:45 to 3:45 am. The melshanti then gave devotees Vishu kaineettam, a gift of coins.
- The temple also holds the Vishu vilakku, a festival of lights, as part of the day.

When to go
Vishu falls on 1 Medam, in mid-April. Families reach Guruvayur the evening before so they can join the queue in the small hours.
