Thulabharam at Guruvayur, Weighing Against an Offering
In thulabharam a devotee sits on one side of a large balance and an offering of equal weight is placed on the other, then given to the deity. Devotees believe it is a way of offering oneself to Guruvayurappan, often to keep a vow made in distress or illness.
What happens
- The devotee sits on one pan of a giant pair of scales. At Guruvayur the usual offerings are bananas, sugar, jaggery and coconuts.
- The offering is added to the other pan until it equals or outweighs the devotee. The devotee chooses the item; lotus flowers, rice, sesame, butter and coins are other choices.
- The weighed offering is then given to the deity.
- Families often add it to another visit. One reported family offered thulabharam on the morning of their baby's choroonu.
