Choroonu at Guruvayur: Booking a Baby's First Rice Feeding

Guruvayur 1–2 days

Choroonu (annaprasanam) is the first time a baby is fed rice, and many Kerala families hold it at Guruvayur before Guruvayurappan. Book the slot through Guruvayur Devaswom's own portal, which lists it as Annaprasam / Choroonu.

What happens

  1. Book a date and slot on the Devaswom portal. The form asks for the child's name, gender and birth star, both parents' details with ID proof, the number of relatives attending, and whether it is one child or twins.
  2. On the day, report with the printed receipt and the original ID proof used for booking. Only Hindu devotees may conduct choroonu at the temple.
  3. The ceremony is held early in the morning. One reported family choroonu took place at 5 am, after the Usha pooja.
  4. The baby is blessed and fed its first rice, often by the father, an uncle or a grandfather. Some families also offer a thulabharam on the same visit.
