Guru Peyarchi and Guru Pariharam at Alangudi

Alangudi and 1 more place 1–2 days

Families pray to Guru Bhagavan (Jupiter) at Alangudi, which devotees believe eases the planet's effects in a horoscope. Thursdays are busy, and Guru peyarchi, Jupiter's move into a new sign, brings the largest crowds.

What happens

  1. Devotees worship Guru Bhagavan at his shrine inside the Shiva temple. HR&CE calls Alangudi the Navagraha shrine where Guru is propitiated.
  2. As at other Navagraha temples, many offer cloth, grain and flowers linked to the planet and light a set of lamps.
  3. On Guru peyarchi, the temple holds special poojas for Dakshinamurthy, and extra buses run to Alangudi from across the state.
